"O give thanks to the Lord: for He is good, for His mercy and loving kindness endure forever."
When we contemplate
the characteristics of this Divine excellency,
we cannot do otherwise than bless God for it.
His mercy is "great" (I Kings 3:6),
"plenteous" (Psalm 86:5),
"tender" (Luke 1:78),
"abundant" (I Peter 1:3);
it is "from everlasting to everlasting
upon them that fear Him" (Psalm 103:17).
Well may we say with the Psalmist,
"I will sing aloud of Thy mercy" (Psalm 59:16).
If we are to study the mercy of God,
as it is set forth in Scripture,
a threefold distinction needs to be made,
if the Word of Truth (the Bible) is to be
First, there is a general mercy of God,
which is extended not only to all people,
believers and unbelievers alike;
but, also to the entire creation:
"His tender mercies are over all His works"
"He gives to all life, and breath, and all things"
God has pity upon the brute creation in their needs, and supplies them with suitable provision.
Second, there is a special mercy of God,
which is exercised toward the children of men, helping and succoring them,
even though they sin.
To them also He communicates all the necessities of life;
"For He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good,
and sends rain on the just and on the unjust"
Thirdly, there is a sovereign mercy
which is reserved for the heirs of salvation,
which is communicated to them
in a covenant way,
through the Mediator.
And what about the wicked,
those who have not received the Lord Jesus Christ into their heart and life,
those who do not love Him
and do not desire to turn from sin and
live in obedience to God's Word?
The mercies which God gives to them are of a temporary nature only.
In other words these persons receive mercies ONLY in this present life.
There will be NO mercy extended to them beyond the grave.
"It is a people of no understanding:
therefore He that made them will not have mercy on them,
and He that formed them will show them no favour"
Because this is such an awesome truth,
you and I should be diligent in sharing the Gospel with our friends.
Ask God to give you opportunities to tell others about His mercy.
Share God's plan of salvation with others.
Pray they will recognize their pitiful life,
apart from God.
Pray they will come to a true realization of their sin, as described in the Bible,
and truly repent.
Ask God to enlighten their mind so as to receive, by faith,
what the Bible says about Christ.
Pray that He will enable and persuade
to them embrace the Lord Jesus Christ as He is freely offered in the Gospel.
Father, as your child, thank you that I am included in your mercy that goes beyond this world and on to the life hereafter, when I am in Heaven with you. Help me learn how to present the Saving Gospel of truth and give me opportunities to share it with others. Amen
